Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees
CWR is a volunteer-led charity making sure refugee families and asylum seekers in Cheltenham are supported from the moment they move in.
We work to raise awareness and understanding of the issues faced by refugees in the UK and throughout the world. We want to build a kinder and more inclusive society through vocal support of resettlement, migration and asylum.
We also arrange community events to help families to meet up with one another and adjust to their new homes together. We host a weekly support hub for those seeking asylum, run English classes, and hold summer picnics and festive celebrations, as well as providing background support and resources as needed.
We hold regular public meetings to help deconstruct ideas and myths about issues affecting refugees and asylum seekers, and advocate for a fairer and more humane asylum system in the UK.
Cheltenham is officially a Town of Sanctuary, welcoming refugees and asylum seekers from across the world. Cheltenham’s a really special place, and it’s wonderful to share it with so many people who need care and new opportunities.
CWR was honoured to be awarded the King’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2024.
