CWR Book Group - Three Hours by Rosamund Lupton

The next CWR/Lives of Colour Book Group is on Tuesday 5 October 2021, 7:30pm on Zoom.

The book this month is Three Hours, by Rosamund Lupton, and it’s a thriller!

Set in rural Somerset, in the middle of a blizzard, a school is under siege. From the wounded headmaster in the library, unable to help his trapped pupils and staff, to teenage Hannah in love for the first time, to the parents gathering desperate for news, to the 16 year old Syrian refugee trying to rescue his little brother, to the police psychologist who must identify the gunmen, to the students taking refuge in the school theatre, all experience the most intense hours of their lives, where evil and terror are met by courage, love and redemption.

Join us to discuss it, 7:30pm on 5 October!

Even though book group is going back on zoom for now, there are still opportunities to meet up in person in October.

CWR are participating in Cheltenham Literature Festival’s “Lit Crawl” on Saturday October 9th! Look out for more information as plans for the event come together.

Perhaps you’re planning to attend some of the events at this year’s literature festival that tie in with books we’ve read this year? Bernadine Evaristo is a big presence at this year’s festival, Elif Shafak is back, and we’ve also spotted Nikesh Shukla – editor of our very first book group pick, The Good Immigrant. Maybe we’ll see you there!

Refugee Week 2021 - 'We never walk alone.'

  • Google Calendar ICS

We love celebrating national Refugee Week at CWR, sharing events and activities with Cheltenham to learn about and reach out to refugees both in our town and across the world.

This year’s theme is ‘We Never Walk Alone’ - even though many of us have been isolated and stressed this year, so many of us are going through the same things, and we have an opportunity to reach out and care for one another with loving support. Every day brings a new chance to make a difference to a person who might be lost or struggling, and in 2021 we want to celebrate the connections that bring us all happiness and enrichment.

We’re in the process of planning this year’s events, so please keep an eye on this page for more information! You can also receive updates to your email inbox with our monthly newsletter, which you can sign up to here.

CWR Book Group - poetry by Caleb Femi

Everybody is welcome to our bimonthly book group! We meet on the first Tuesday of every other month.

This month, Tuesday 2nd March at 7.30pm, we’ll be reading poetry by Caleb Femi, which we’ll post here soon. Everyone is welcome, and there’s no pressure to read the book ahead of time. Bring a glass of wine or a cup of tea and join us! soon here and in our monthly newsletter.

Femi is a young poet and director. He arrived in the UK from Nigeria at age seven, to live with his parents on London’s North Peckham Estate. His poems tend to explore the trials, tribulations, dreams and joys of young Black boys in twenty-first century Peckham.

His debut collection, ‘Poor’, has been described as ‘startlingly beautiful’ and ‘a breath-taking ode to Femi’s black boyhood lived inside the concrete blocks and walkways of the estate’. We will talk about 3 of the poems particularly, which have all been filmed and are available online in video format:

‘Because of the Times’, read here by Yinka Bokinni in tribute to Damilola Taylor who died on the estate Femi grew up on: Damilola Taylor: A tribute to my friend - BBC News

‘Coping’ Caleb Femi - Coping - YouTube explores grief and mourning through the eyes of black boys.

‘And They Knew Light’ Caleb Femi - And They Knew Light – YouTube, a poem and film Femi made after the Grenfell Tower tragedy to take back that narrative on council estates.

“Conversations" featuring Anna Ost - in association with UoG's Refugee Support Society

Anna Ost is a community care solicitor who spent several years working for a charity, supporting people seeking asylum. She will share her knowledge and speak about what people seeking asylum have to prove to establish themselves as refugees.

She will also explain the law around access to social care for people without recourse to public funds - more important than ever during Covid, and on a topic that recently left our PM a bit confused...

Virtual Carol Singing

Are you missing the thought of singing carols together this Christmas? Our Faith Group has organised a virtual carol session for people of faith and no faith to come together and sing out united in friendship, with a warm welcome to refugees and asylum seekers.

Our carol singing is open to all members of the Cheltenham community. Hold out a virtual hand by singing with us.

Don’t worry if you don’t consider yourself a star singer - we’ll listen to the music together and sing away in front of our muted microphones with the words shown on the screen.

Please come along to sing with us and to join in with the Christmas cheer.

Many thanks to the following groups for contributing songs:

- Elim Church, Cheltenham.

- Gloucestershire University’s chaplaincy

- St. Peter’s Church, Leckhampton.

"Conversations" featuring Tom McKearney - in association with UoG's Refugee Support Society

In 2018, Tom decided to pack his bag and use his skills as a trainee GP to help people with little access to medical care: Rohingya refugees, crammed in a camp in Bangladesh after fleeing the violent persecution in Myanmar.

Tom will talk about the Rohingya – who they are and what has forced them to leave their home. He’ll describe the difficult living situation they were facing even before Covid-19 and how the current pandemic has exacerbated the circumstances in the camps.

Join us and the UoG's Refugee Support Society on Tuesday, 8 December 2020 at 17:15 to hear more from Tom!
